PA State Parks Series: Rickett's Glenn

They were so strong in their beliefs that there came a time when it hardly mattered what exactly those beliefs were; they all fused into a single stubbornness.
-- Louise Erdrich

This was one of the last shots from my recent hike up the mountainside and past all the waterfalls at Rickett's Glen State Park just north of Bloomsburg PA.

The battery in the "good camera" had finally given out and I pulled out my trusty old Olympus with the dead LCD screen, and set up and took this shot. First of the day with that camera.

Most of the day it was just way too bright along the trails for the extended exposure that this type of shot requires.

Techniques/tools:
1) A tripod.
2) Aperture at f8.0 (limit of my camera - if I could go to f16 I would).
3) Shutter open as long as possible. In this case the evening was moving in and I was able to take this one at a 1.0 second exposure (thus the need for number 1).
4) Use the delay timer setting on the camera (prevents me from accidentally jarring the camera when I press the shutter button).
5) Late, late afternoon, low light, in the shade of the mountain. I took many shots that day - but during mid afternoon it was so bright out - even with overcast skies, that I couldn't get less than a 1/20th second shutter speed.. Making for fairly nice waterfall shots but nothing like the glassy effect of this 1 second shot.

Lessons learned:
1) A lot of my shots were overexposed - I was pressing the limit on what I could do - for the water effect. It became distracting on the foliage in the background when it was much too bright to look natural even though the water itself looked nice.
2) I should probably invest in some lens filters to keep the glare/bright light muted.

Any other thoughts/comments?

Technically, I know nothing, of course, but this is a beautiful picture. I know that. :)
