It's hard to pick out just one or two shots from someplace like Rickett's Glen. Even if 85% of my shots were less than what I'd like to publish, that still leaves 15-20 pretty good ones...
I'll stop for now with this one, but maybe one of these days I'll post a couple more.
Lesson's learned from my first trip (with point and shoot) included the idea that a tripod is a must, and with THAT camera, with an f8.0 minimum aperture, cloud cover (or a decent filter) was a must to get the extended exposure required for a shot like this.
This time, I came with a better camera, and pushed the limit the other way. I could do more than the 1/2 second or so before... so I took some at 1/2 second, some at 2.5 or even as much as 5.0 seconds.
I got lucky with this shot, at 2.5 seconds... many of them did not fair so well. Even with a tripod, there's a danger in extended exposure... The slightest vibrations tend to make things blurred - that could be the vibration of the ground from the falling water, or the slight breeze shaking the foliage. This one worked out but in the end, most of my 1/2 to 1 second shots worked out better than the ones in the 2-5 second range...
So lessons learned for next trip may be to concentrate on the 1/2 to 1 second exposures - In this case the extra seconds didn't really much change the feel of the water falling anyways.
Still not bad for my 2nd trip (and the first with an SLR).

I am beginning to get it figured out. The 50mm f1.8 lens that I bought awhile back to play with on the other camera is awesome for portraits (for the price), I think... Haven't used it at all till today so we'll see... I did use the 'big whompin' lens (70-300mm Sigma) and at first was really disappointed with it - got to keep it super-steady at 300mm and low light - but with that said, I have gotten some pretty good shots once I stabilized it enough. As for the waterfall shots, I used the kit lens when is an IS lens.

man, i can only imagine the 50mm on that thing! i am lookin to pick one of them up soon enough. i hear they are stunning! prime lenses are supposed to be soooo much clearer. yea i have a 70-300mm tamron lens and in low light it really sucks! not good at all. tho mine is like a bottom of the barrell lens. yuk. i really dont like the results of it usually. but hey, its the only telephoto i have so what can ya do right? at some point i need to get me a IS lens. lol, at some point i need to get a couple hundred bucks of disposable income!
The photo is fantastic.. and the info with it equally worthy! I know one needs to understand the workings of a camera to get max benifit from it.. your explanation sure helps, I copy and save each one of your informative comments.. thanks for taking the time to do so James!
